When moving to another country it can be difficult to decide what to bring with you.  We hope that the following information along with the more comprehensive information in our IFG Abu Dhabi Pre-Arrival guide will help you plan your trip to the UAE.

Documents you need to travel to the UAE

The most important things to remember when travelling to the UAE or any country are you travel documents and any letters regarding your IFG course and accommodation. We also advice you keep photocopies of everything in your check-in luggage and also leave a copy with your family.

What to pack for your move to Abu Dhabi or Dubai

  • Summer clothing
  • Sunglasses, a cap or a hat, and a pullover in your hand luggage
  • Your normal range of clothes and buy additional items when you are here
  • Clothes for a special occasion – a suit, dress or national costume

  • Laptop, mobile phones, tablets etc – but remember to get them insured
  • International plug adaptors and phone chargers
  • Any prescription medication that you are taking should be in their original packaging and with a letter from your doctor
  • Sunscreen (for everyday use not just the beach)

  • International bank cards
  • Cash for immediate use (approx. USD 300)
  • If you can then open an online bank account before arrival

What not to pack

Before you travel please check your baggage allowance and remember you can always buy things in Abu Dhabi.  However, there are some things you should not bring

FAQs

Abu Dhabi is one of the most international cities in the world and home to restaurants serving a wide range of cuisines. Supermarkets also have ‘international food’ sections and there are many small shops which specialise in specific foods and ingredients.

As you would expect Abu Dhabi has numerous shopping malls with many clothes shops such as H&M, R&B and Max which offer a good range of clothes at reasonable prices.

Some items are banned in the UAE (such as pirated content) and others are restricted (medicine, for example), so it is a good idea to familiarise yourself with these – https://u.ae/en/information-and-services/finance-and-investment/clearing-the-customs-and-paying-customs-duty
